City of El Paso Says Warming Centers Aren t Being Used

The El Paso Office of Emergency Management is concerned that the community isn t taking advantage of the community warming centers. Due to the extreme weather conditions in El Paso, the City opened up its community centers to offer citizens relief from either the extreme heat or the extreme cold. The current cold snap El Paso was anticipating since last week, prompted the City to open up warming centers for citizens to keep warm. However, the snow fell and the community centers remained empty. This could mean one of two things; either citizens at risk (like the elderly) were perfectly warm during the snow storm or, citizens were not aware of these facilities.

According to PowerOutage.us, about 2.6 million customers in Texas are currently without power in nearly every part of the state. Scripps station KXXV in Waco, Texas reports that the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has declared a level 3 alert — the council’s highest possible emergency level — and has instructed utility companies across the state to rotate power outages to conserve energy.
