The revered actor-director got an Oscar nomination for playing an East L.A. schoolteacher. Through the Latino Film Institute he's fulfilling that role in real life by letting young people of color tell their stories on film.
Born in 1947 in East Los Angeles, Olmos graduated from Montebello High School in 1964 and earned a degree in sociology and criminal justice at East Los Angeles College. Olmos struck it big with the 1988 film "Stand and Deliver."
