Rescue crews in Turkey and Syria raced against time Thursday and a lack of equipment to find survivors buried in the rubble of buildings toppled by powerful earthquakes that struck the region Monday and left more than 19,000 people dead so far.
The country’s disaster management agency said.
The death toll across both countries has surpassed 20,000 and is now higher than the 17,000 killed in 1999 when a similarly powerful quake hit north-western Turkey.
