Community garden gets funding

Just when it looked like a community garden project on Valencia County’s east side was going to whither away, a $30,000 grant from CYFD gave it another year of life. Days after Valencia County commissioners unanimously voted to not provide $15,000 for the Eastern Valencia Urban Gardens Program, administered by the staff of the Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District, the award of the CYFD grant was announced. “We had applied for it, thinking of it as our Plan B,” said VSWCD district director Andrew Hautzinger. “Who could imagine the county wouldn’t fund it?” He continued, saying the district was relieved to get the grant, which would give the program another year to look for more permanent funding.

Early voting for CD-1 special election has begun in county

Early voting in the special election to fill the vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Mexico Congressional District 1 began on Tuesday, May 4. The congressional district includes a small part of Valencia County — voting precincts 6, 16, 22, 28, 49, 50, 56 and 60 — on the east side of the county. Communities in those precincts include Meadow Lake, Monterey Park, El Cerro Mission, Cypress Gardens and El Cerro. The seat became vacant when Rep. Deb Haaland left the position when she was selected as Secretary of the Interior earlier this year, and now a special election must be held to fill her seat for the remainder of her term.

Local volunteers providing food boxes to families in need

Knowing food can be scarce for Valencia County families and sometimes even harder to come by during the pandemic, local volunteers and organizations are making use of a federal program to get nutritious, fresh food into the hands of those who need it most. On Friday, Feb. 5, a semi truck hauling 1,300 boxes of food was met by a small army of volunteers from local churches, businesses and community centers to distribute the food across the county. The boxes come from the Farmers to Families Food Box Program, a USDA grant program that partners with national, regional and local distributors, to purchase fresh produce, dairy and meat products from American producers of all sizes.
