The temperature hit 88 degrees Friday in San Diego, tying the highest reading the city has ever posted in January dating back to the 1870s, according to the National Weather Service.
The previous reading of 88 came on Jan. 10, 1953.
Heat records also fell in five other communities, including Vista, Chula Vista, Escondido, Ramona and El Cajon.
The high temperatures were largely generated by Santa Ana winds, which turned out to be much stronger inland than forecast, gusting to 82 mphat Sill Hill in East County’s Cuyamaca Mountains and to the mid-60s at Mount Laguna and Sunrise Highway.

The wind and heat also came on a day when the weather service said the county could be hit with a volatile mix of snow, rain and wind on Monday and Tuesday. Forecasters said their computer models are pointing to the kind of rare convergence that occurred in February 2008, when the region was unexpectedly slammed by heavy snow inland and slashing rains at and near the coast.
