New York, Dec. 18, 2020 (PANA/Naija247news) Human Rights Watch on Friday slammed Morocco for cracking down on pro-independence activists in Western Sahara after an incident at a border crossing on 13 November, 2020.
The incident re-ignited the long-stalled conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front, the Algeria-based independence movement for the territory, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
It said security forces broke up pro-independence demonstrations and harassed, beat up, arrested, or attacked the houses of several of the activists.
The human rights watchdog said the recognition by the US administration of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara on 10 December, “does not change its status in the United Nations system as a non-self-governing territory”.
