The Union government in December last year had brought in amendments to the central Motor
Vehicles Rules, 1989. Accordingly, it had directed vehicles that are older than 15 years be scrapped. The move aims at stimulating the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles and ensuring that pollution levels go down in the country, which is reeling from deteriorating air quality in several major cities. Subsequently,
regional transport authorities already started taking action against old private vehicles plying in the city. The city traffic police have also jumped into the bandwagon and started penalising vehicles that do not make the cut, including two-wheelers with missing mirrors and other safety gears, which authorities insist could lead to accidents.
