The specter of suicide bombing that is synonymous with insurgency in the northern part of the country seemed to have made a landfall in the southern part of the country with what appeared to be an attempted suicide bombing in Ebonyi State Tuesday.
This first experience in southern nigeria happened when the vest laced with dynamite the suspected suicide bomber wore exploded.
The incident, which occurred at Afikpo town in Afikpo North Local Government Area, came on a day police stations were again attacked in Enugu and Imo states.

Suspected suicide bomber dies in Ebonyi
A government official has confirmed the incident.

A man suspected to be suicide bomber was on Tuesday blown into pieces when a suicide vest he was wearing exploded on his body.
The incident happened in Afikpo town, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria’s South-east.
A resident in the area said the incident happened around 12 noon.
“He made an attempt at entering Amaizu/ Amangballa Primary School but was turned back by the school security since he couldn’t justify his reason for visiting. He immediately started running inside a nearby bush before a big bang was heard,” the resident said.

A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man suspected to be a suicide bomber blew himself up opposite the campus 2 of Amaizu/Amangbala primary school in Afikpo LGA of Ebonyi state today May 25.
A resident of the area said the incident happened close to the Eke Market in Afikpo which happens to be the biggest market in the area. According to the resident, the suspected bomber was earlier seen wandering the area, adding that the suspect “first came into a beer parlor and when the people inquired who he was, he left.”
He was said to have moved to the school side and when the gateman asked him to go back, he made effort to remove his clothes when the explosive went off. The resident said some people reconvened at the scene of the incident few minutes after only to discover the suspected suicide bomber laying dead in the pull of his own blood.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has said the man killed in an explosion, on Tuesday, in Afikpo, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was not a suicide bomber.
The spokesperson of the Police in the state, Mrs Loveth Odah, said the victim of the blast was a policeman on duty in the area.
She said the policeman was a Mobile Police Officer on special deployment to Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
She said the officer, Mr Idi Aminu, died as a result of an accidental hand grenade explosion.
