Wheels turn on rail plan | May 24
There is always a problem when talk turns to federally funded high-speed rail projects; once the construction is completed and the shiny new wears off, somebody has to do the dirty work of maintenance. Although I didnât much care for Gov. Rick Scott, I think his rejection of the pot of gold that was Tampa-to-Orlando high-speed rail was the prudent move. At the time I thought the ridership studies were greatly inflated. Tough as it may be, if weâre going to be

Cameron Herrin was sentenced to 24 years for two counts of vehicular homicide for racing on Bayshore Boulevard, which resulted in the deaths of a young mother and her 1-year-old. Herrin faced a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 30 years in prison. His attorneys asked for a six-year sentence and the family of those killed wanted 30. What is the price for two lives? Reading about this new piece of legislation, I realized that Florida was adopting the same rules that China was imposing on the citizens of Hong Kong. The only difference was the reaction of the citizens. In Hong Kong, a million people took to the streets in protest. Florida held a celebration to commend the Republicans for yet another assault on our Constitution.

People wait in a long line to buy groceries at H-E-B in Austin, Texas, during last week s extreme cold snap and widespread power outage. [ AP ]

For decades, Texas has railed against anything having to do the U.S government and the other 49 states. Its governor, senators (especially Ted Cruz), and representatives have portrayed Texas as a stand-alone government, unhampered by the feds, and disavowing the legally, fair and constitutional election of Joe Biden. Their independence extends to designing and maintaining their own power grid and at one time, threatening to succeed from the Union. But now that their power grids, water systems and natural gas lines have failed, they want help from the very people and government they vilified and scorned for so long.
