This wasnt about asking people if they felt they were having imaginary conversations with the dead. The question was do you , genuinely believe that you are in touch with spirits and you are hearing from them . As i mentioned, 27 of the people said that they were which would have translated to about 50 million americans who believe d that they were in touch with the dead. So that was in 1983.
