The school board agreed to decrease the maximum levy by $58,012, for a final 2023 levy of $1,688,953. This is a 2.62% – or $43,104 – increase over last year.

ELY – School Board members here met in a study session Monday night to discuss various updates on design, financing, and construction involving the district’s $20 million facility renovation project.
Architects presented numerous full-color, three-dimensional drawings as well as an animated tour of the new construction that will connect the Memorial and Washington school buildings.
Karl Larsen, principal architect for Architectural Resources, Inc., updated the board on the two phases of the project. The first phase involves design and construction of the new addition that will connect the campus buildings. The second phase involves renovations, reuse and updating of both existing buildings.

Houston County commissioners certified the 2021 levy on December 15. The total payable amount is the same as last year - with a â0% increase.â So the total (gross levy) will be $13,527,998. Reduced by county program aid, the net levy remains at $12,439,721. That net amount also includes an expected surplus of $30,207.
Even though the overall levy remains the same, individual taxpayers may see some significant differences in taxable valuations in 2021. That will affect the share that each property owner will pay towards the net levy.Â
The board also approved the 2021 final operating budget at 29,311,947 in expenditures, and revenues of $29,346,611.
Staff reported that Houston County will receive $387,594 as part of a small business relief grant program from the State of Minnesota, of which approximately $8,000 can be used for administrative costs associated with the effort.
