Mr. Baleka had planned to represent Guinea-Bissau, the country from which his ancestors were enslaved, according to DNA results. Born in the United States, Mr. Baleka became a dual citizen of Guinea-Bissau in 2020 after discovering that he is an Afrodescendant of the Balanta tribe, whose ancestral territory is largely in present-day Guinea-Bissau.
