The Museum of the Bible has just returned 5000 illegally excavated objects to Egypt

The objects have been at the museum since 2016 when Egypt began seeking repatriation of the objects.  Since opening its doors the museum has come under fire for incomplete provenance. In returning to Egypt, the pieces will now be displayed at the Coptic Museum in Cairo, Egypt.  The Museum of the Bible is a privately owned American institution. As of 27 January 2021 the Washington, DC based museum has returned some 5 000 objects to the Egyptian government. This after the American Department of Homeland Security and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities have been in talks regarding the stolen artefacts since 2017.  The objects have been in the possession of the museum since 2016 when Egypt began seeking repatriation of the objects.

Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., 2017. | The Christian Post Weeks after the Museum of the Bible in Washington transferred control of 5,000 disputed manuscripts and bits of papyrus to the U.S. government, officials have repatriated the artifacts to Egypt, from where the items were thought to have been illegally shipped during the Arab Spring. The handover of the artifacts, which included manuscript fragments, funeral masks, parts of coffins, and the heads of statues, was preceded by extensive discussions with Egyptian officials that started in late 2017, MOTB Chairman of the Board Steve Green said in a statement last week.
