Australia has a new Group One star after Zaaki silenced his doubters with a Doomben Cup demolition job which had jockey James McDonald poking fun at his rivals.
The English import’s seven-length romp saw him power into $4 Cox Plate favouritism later this year, while other race fancies Sir Dragonet and Mugatoo misfired badly.
The jaw-dropping performance leaves McDonald with an interesting decision to make heading into the spring as the regular rider of seven-time Group One winner Verry Elleegant, who is considered Australia’s premier weight-for-age horse.
