Norsepower and NMS sign exclusive partnership to solve clean technology retrofit challenges
Newport Maritime Services (NMS) has partnered with Helsinki-based Norsepower, the leading global provider of auxiliary wind propulsion systems, as an exclusive wind technology supplier for its NMS platform. The current demands on the industry to cut its emission means that new and innovative solutions need to be accessible for the maritime market.
Ship operators and owners are also looking at smart technologies which will help them future proof their business, whilst also cutting time and cost. In the exclusive partnership with NMS, shipowners will now be able to access Norsepower’s Rotor Sail technology via the booking platform. Having this type of access will mean that ship owners and operators benefit from being able to access this technology whilst booking other services.

The scheme is designed to benefit shipowners, managers, and Newport’s ten partner shipyards initially participating in it.
In a radical shift from the often time-consuming and laborious process of negotiating repair and retrofit contracts, the digital model is designed to provide instant quotes for routine repairs, show shipyard availability, and give owners and operators priority access to available shipyard slots.
NMS managing director Ege Akcasoy said that the network of participating shipyards is likely to be expanded from the initial ten companies with facilities in China, Indonesia, Oman, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey. However, the existing yard network lies close to routes accounting for more than 70% of world seaborne trade, the company said.
Ship repair and retrofit goes digital
Leading ship maintenance specialist, Newport Shipping, has unveiled a first of kind, innovative online portal that has been specifically designed to ease the complexities of ship repair and retrofit works.
Digitalisation is making its mark in the shipping sector, with many bespoke online tools now being utilised daily to operate and manage the world’s merchant vessel fleet. Arguably however, the ship repair and retrofit sector has lagged behind in adapting to the digital age, with most of the work around these vital activities still being conducted via complex spreadsheets, layers of brokers and reams of paperwork.
