Whitehall is said to be examining the agreement passed by Brussels that would end sales of new CO2-emitting cars by 2035 but with an exemption for cars running on e-fuels.
A DfT spokesperson told us that if industry can prove e-fuels are zero-emission at the tailpipe combustion engine cars using them would remain on sale beyond 2035.
