The Niger Delta militant group, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has threatened to resume hostilities against oil and gas operations in the region over an alleged employment scam in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
According to the MEND, they are ready to shatter the existing peace in the region within the next seven days if deployment letters are not issued to genuine and eligible indigent Niger Delta youths shortlisted by the NDDC from August 2019.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Godswill Akpabio, has denied paying $5million bribe to the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, for the appointment of Effiong Okon Akwa, the Sole Administrator for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Akwa was appointed as Sole Administrator for the NDDC last year but reports emerged that Akpabio allegedly bribed Malami to facilitate the appointment.
Although Malami has since denied the allegations, challenging anyone with evidences he commited the crime to provide them.
In the same vein, Akpabio has denied bribing the AGF, describing the reports as fake.
A statement by Akapbio’s Chief Press Secretary, Anietie Ekong, insisted that the report was the handiwork of mischief-makers.

Four concerned and aggrieved Niger Delta indigenes, Messrs. David Odeli, Anino Ajemigbogho, Adidi Preboye, and Albert Edumogiren, have on behalf of themselves and others, approached the Federal High Court Holden at Warri, Delta State, seeking an Order directing that the name of Mr. Effiong Okon Akwa announced by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Interim Sole Administrator of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, be reversed, “as same offends the law establishing the 4th Defendant (NDDC)”.
In the Originating Summons of Suit No. FHC/WR/ CS/4/ 2021, the aggrieved Niger Deltans cum plaintiffs, contended that the appointment of Effiong Akwa as Sole Administrator of NDDC on December 13, 2020, “is unlawful and alien to the Act creating NDDC and other relevant laws”.

PAN Ijaw group Meinbutus has called on stakeholders in the Niger Delta to allow the newly appointed Sole Administrator for the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mr Effiong Okon Akwa to focus on his mandate to reposition the commission, saying groups in the region cannot continue to attack anyone appointed to serve the commission.
Briefing journalists yesterday in Warri, Delta state, the trio of president of the group, Mr Joseph Eniekebi, the Public relation officer, Mr Charles Mokena and the Chief Adviser , Mr Chris Ateboh said those whose trade is to always attack appointments into the commission on ethnic grounds should change their mentality, adding that other parts of the country were beginning to note the Niger Del

Delta youths on Thursday blocked the Delta State axis of the East-West road, protesting the appointment of a sole administrator for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The angry youth under the aegis of Urhobo Youths Leaders’ Council (UYLC), disrupted commercial activities and chanting solidarity songs while denouncing the development.
They issued President Buhari a 20-day ultimatum to appoint a substantive board for the NDDC or be ready for a showdown.
Tribune Online reports that travellers were stuck in East-West road as movements to and from Port Harcourt, Bayelsa was disrupted for several hours.
The youth were also armed with tugs of trees and placards bearing various inscriptions such as, “President Buhari, obey the NDDC Act by appointing a substantive board,” “Urhobo youths are angry,” and “Urhobo youths are in support of the forensic audit, but appoint a board for the Commission.”
