David Rohrer, deputy county executive for public safety, will take over as interim police chief for the Fairfax County Police Chief on Feb. 1.
The appointment was made by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors at a meeting yesterday as Edwin Roessler, the current police chief, retires next month.
It isn’t the first time Rohrer has worked for FCPD. From July 2004 to October 2012, Rohrer was appointed as the first-ever deputy county executive for public safety. He jumpstarted his career in 1980 as a patrol officer in Fairfax County. During his 32-year tenure, he worked his way up to several ranks of the department as captain, major and deputy police chief.
Glenn Allen Myer, 61, of Falls Church was trying to break into an apartment complex in the Falls Church section of Fairfax County Thursday. Police responded to the scene before 11 a.m. after the teenager called 911 saying he had been shot in the face.
County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said police decided to break into the apartment after it was clear that a negotiation was going to be unproductive.
Roessler called the officers “brave” in their attempt to subdue Myer and rescue the boy. He said Myer shot at the officers, who returned fire.
One of the officers was grazed by a bullet. Myer was shot in the upper body and taken to the hospital.
Two people are in the hospital, and one officer was grazed by a bullet in a Thursday morning shootout in Falls Church, Virginia.
County police and Fairfax County sheriff’s deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Peach Orchard Drive around 10:50 a.m. after receiving a report that a teenager had been shot, police Chief Edwin Roessler said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
The teen told 911 he had been shot in the face and that the shooter was actively trying to break into his room.
Police “immediately started negotiations with those inside the apartment,” Roessler said. “However, the suspect was still armed with a firearm and was actively trying to attack the victim again.”

Amidst national calls for transparency and accountability in policing, the Fairfax County Police Department is launching a new interactive data dashboard.
The tool, which is based on Geographic Information System mapping, houses data including arrests, citations, warnings and police department training and policies. FCPD will debut the new platform at a series of virtual town halls beginning on Nov. 18.
“We look forward to implementing this additional layer of accountability and leveraging data analytics to continue to strengthen trust and confidence in your police department,” FCPD wrote in a statement.
The department says the tool was designed based on community input.
