Old picture of St Thomas Street, Weymouth, in the 1950s

The striking photo dates from September 1954 and comes courtesy of the Terence Gale Collection. A crowd of people are trying to make their way onto the double decker bus and shoppers are seen hurrying across the road. On a building behind the bus you can see a William Whittle s florist advertising sign whilst to the left is the Clinton Arcade, housing the Clinton Cafe. This building used to be home to the Edwin Jones department store, which, in keeping with tradition, even had a lift attendant. The William Whittle signage remained in place until 2000. Also of interest on the left is a little lad on a bike behind a lovely old looking car.
