Palmer buying police body cameras with federal grant Updated Dec 16, 2020; PALMER – The Police Department will purchase 30 body cameras for all of its full time officers. Palmer Police Chief Christopher Burns successfully applied for a $31,200 federal grant to pay for the new equipment, Town Manager Ryan McNutt told the council at Monday’s meeting. The idea of equipping officers with cameras was first researched in depth by the department in 2018. The money to purchase them, from a US Department of Justice program, called Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. It is named in memory of Byrne, a 22-year-old New York City police officer, who was shot to death while on duty in 1988.
