Final Program Tonight for Jazz Plaza: HotHouse Meets Havana

The award-winning Chicago-based nonprofit arts presenter HotHouse is providing the official international streaming platform. Each program will be preceded by a 30 minute dance party hosted by DJ Madrid. More information is available at hothouse.net. Host for the Jan. 24 program is Richard Steele. This recently retired host and contributor to Chicago s NPR station WBEZ s talk shows and jazz programs, is a past president of NATRA, the black radio announcer s guild.

click to enlarge The Reader s first gig poster of 2021 is a tribute to jazz, Cuba, and collaborative concert organizing by a designer with roots in alternative weekly papers. Venerable local arts presenter HotHouse, which has been bringing diverse online programming to international audiences for the past few months, celebrates its 34th year with HotHouse Meets Havana, a five-night stream of Latin-jazz musicians based in Cuba interspersed with sets by artists based in the States including current and former Chicagoans Hamid Drake & Michael Zerang, Tomeka Reid & Junius Paul, Ari Brown (with Josef Ben Israel and Charles Heath), Ben LaMar Gay (with Mike Reed and Mayda Del Valle), and Edward Wilkerson Jr. (with Jamie Kempkers and Jim Baker).

DONALD GENE POPP SR. was called to his heavenly home on December 9, 2020, at 9:58 P.M. after an eight year long battle with prostate cancer. He passed away in his home with his wife by his side. Don was born to Mary Nastio and Steve Popp Sr. in Logan, West Virginia, on April 29, 1942. Don grew up in a coal camp with his siblings, Kathryn Popp, Steve Popp Jr., Dolly Mauppin (Jerry) of Carencro, La., Barbara Woolcock (Ted) of Pensacola, Fla., and Jim Popp (Connie) of Montgomery, La. He was very proud of being raised in a coal camp and always longed for his childhood home. Don attended Logan Elementary and graduated from Logan High School in 1960. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His naval career lasted from 1960-1964. While on duty he was assigned to the USS Sandoval, where he served as the ship s postal clerk.
