Afternoon with heavy hearts as the department mourned the loss of sergeant tom smith, a 23year veteran of the force. Were in shock, disbelief, were numb. Were grieving, and please give us some time. Smith was one of seven bart police, five undercover detectives and two uniformed officers doing a search of an apartment at the park sierra complex in dublin. While the officers were inside the one bedroom apartment, one of the detectives guns went off strike and ultimately killing smith. Apartment resident got a brief glimpse of Sergeant Smith as he was rushed away by ambulance. He was in the bed. He wasnt moving. No one else was inside the apartment except the officers so how and why the gun went off during the search is the focus of an investigation by the Alameda County sheriffs office.
