Four month old conjoined twins from Cork Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf are successfully separated.
Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf from Carrigtohill County Cork were born in December 2009 in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, joined from chest to pelvis and and sharing the same liver, gut and bladder.
Now four months old, they returned to Great Ormond Street Hospital for complex surgery to separate them during a fourteen hour operation involving twenty medical staff.
The team of doctors under the consultant neonatal and paediatric surgeon Edward Kiely, himself a native of Cork, worked in shifts for fourteen hours in an operation to separate the two brothers. Lengthy post operative care means it will be some time before the twins will be able to travel home.
