tell us more about what is going on. we have been through a five- year housing crisis. it is showing some signs of stability. we are still experiencing enormous numbers of foreclosures. housing prices continued to fall. people are trying to urge the fannie mae and freddie mac to forgive principal. they want to take the mortgage value down, to reduce the amount of the principal outstanding to make it easier to pay off the loan. this is a kind lot of loan modification. this is called a principal write-down or principal forgiveness. there are other modifications that work very well that fannie mae and freddie mac have been doing. you have these two sides, one side saying do the principal forgiveness, and on the other side you have people saying what about the taxpayer losses that will be associated with those principal write-downs? so that is the battle going on here. you obviously have people everyone is interested in the housing market coming back, but you have to balanc

i m eric thomas. and i m kristen sze. several families are without place to stay this morning victims of a craigslist scam. police say they rented foreclosed empty properties from a martinez man. amy hollyfield live is live at the police station. reporter: police officers first started asking questions. they now believe in guy has been doing this since at least october maybe earlier. here s the guy they are talking 62-year-old alfonso salazar now charged with burglary, grand theft and perjury. police say his scheme was involved and was taking advantage of the economic down turn. they say he would find unoccupied homes or homes in foreclosure, change the locks and advertise that they were for rent on craigslist. he has real estate experience so he drew up sophisticated lease documents and no one suspected a thing. victims handed over first and last month s recent and security deposit and thought everything was fine. he did this with homes in walnut creek, hercules, antioch
