Schools in England have been reminded that there is an expectation upon them to teach children and young people the importance of marriage to society.
During a recent session in the House of Lords on the subject of National Marriage Week, Government whip Baroness Scott of Bybrook was asked whether the Government believes enough is being done to inform young people about marriage.
She responded that in primary schools pupils should be taught that marriage is “a formal and legally recognised commitment” that is “intended to be lifelong”, and that in secondary schools “we build on the teaching about that important relationship and the opportunity that marriage provides”.

The Minister of State for School Standards has reminded schools in England and Wales that they must comply with the requirement to have a daily act of collective worship.
Nick Gibb MP, in a written reply to a question raised by Sir John Hayes MP, stated that the Department for Education (DfE) will investigate schools reported to be in breach of legislation and advise on how they can fulfil their duty.
Under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, state-funded schools must conduct acts of collective worship “wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character”.

An academy trust in London has been accused of failing to uphold its legal requirement to teach Religious Education in its primary schools.
Parents and staff at Millbank Academy in Westminster, part of the Future Academies trust, have reported that the subject is not taught at the school, and it is also missing from pupil timetables.
Despite the evidence, when questioned by the Department for Education (DfE) the trust claimed RE was being taught, and the DfE has taken no further action.
