Back in early 1916, in march or so, gentleman named ferdinand de soto lee, created a nonprofit called the National Memorial association, and its goal was to construct a physical memorial here in the Nations Capital to honor the contributions of negro soldiers and sailors who had fought in every war from the revolutionary war on up until that time. Within a couple years the organization broadened its mission to want to construct what they called a National Memorial building to negro achievement and contributions to america in all fields of endeavor from business to education to the arts, et cetera.
