Hundreds of students, graduates and sympathizers demonstrated in The Hague on Wednesday to protest against the increase in the interest rate on student loans. They protested opposite the temporary building of the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament in The Hague.

Student union announces protest at parliament over interest rate hike on student loans

The national student union LSVb announced a protest at parliament in The Hague later this month against the increase in the interest rate on student loans. The student union doesn’t only want the interest rate hike reversed but also for the government to cancel all student debt and permanently increase the basic study grant.

Total study debt climbs to over €28 billion; Student loan interest rate rising next year

The total study debts of current and former students in the Netherlands (1.6 million people) were 28.2 billion euros at the start of 2023, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) calculated. According to the statistics office, that is an increase of 1.7 billion euros compared to the previous year. The interest paid on study debts will rise from 0.46 percent to 2.56 percent on 1 January 2024, the highest level in 14 years.
