Entrepreneurship in the informal sector is one of the silver bullets to addressing poverty. A non-profit social enterprise backed by major retailers has worked for more than a decade in Cape Town, Paarl, Durban, Johannesburg and East London to 'grow' entrepreneurs to support the circular econom.
Local Hero nominee Varoushca “Vee” Mclaren, 28, from Greenfields, weaves her kindness through multiple pockets of her community, feeding and supporting whoever asks for help. Above running her Educare centre for preschoolers, Mclaren sources donations for the hungry, gathers food parcels for seniors, baby formula for new mothers and runs a soup kitchen once a week outside the Greenfields fire station.
In a successful charity auction hosted by Citadel, Bishops Boys under the mentorship of SA Rugby Captain and Head of Philanthropy at Citadel, Jean de Villiers, raised R400 000 towards the construction of a new building for The Vuka Nomtobhoyi Orphanage and Educare Centre in Langa Township, Cape Town.
