WATERBURY – A city woman was sentenced Thursday to three months in federal prison for fraudulently receiving more than $140,000 in Social Security benefits over the span of 13 years.
Omayra Santiago, 44, pleaded guilty to theft and conversion of public money after authorities say Santiago received supplemental Social Security payments in the names of her children, falsely stating her household income and living arrangements to get them.
Those payments were made from 2005 to 2018, according to authorities. Federal authorities say she also failed to disclose that she received $220,000 from a legal settlement she received following a car accident, but continued to receive the Social Security payments.
