ETTRICK - The oldest Greek-lettered sorority for Black women in the country is being recognized by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources with a historical Highway Marker.
Chartered in 1921, the Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa is the fourth oldest graduate chapter in AKA s history and the oldest chapter in the Mid-Atlantic region. It is the first full AKA chapter in Virginia to be recognized by a marker. The national sorority serves over 300,000 women in over 1,000 chapters.
VDHR s Board of Historic Resources approved the marker on Dec. 10 after a four month process validating historical accuracy, historical significance and language use of the marker. It was approved alongside five others in the section of Diversity.
