An extract from âThe Meaning of Christmas,â a sermon by R.G. Lee
âAnd the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.ââLuke 2:20.
As the sun went down in the western sea that day, the stars came out, and the Messiahâs star shone bright. As the temple shepherds watched their flocks by night, in the midst of the starlit silence appeared a gloryâand a voice. âAnd there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. âAnd, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. âAnd the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. âFor unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.ââLuke 2:8â11.

Christmas is meant to be, first and foremost, a celebration of our Savior’s birth. So amid the busyness, we as believers need to take time to savor the amazing gift God gave us all those ages ago. The Nativity story in Luke 1-2 details the beginning of Jesus’ life here on Earth as Immanuel, or “God with us.”
The images in this story evoke a sense of wonder and awe in so many hearts. In fact, many music composers have been inspired to base chants, songs and carols on these verses. One such hymn is called “The Gloria” or “Glory to God.” It is sung in the Catholic Church, as well as other denominations, especially during Advent and Lent.
