The BBC s Europe Editor Katya Adler told the Radio 4 Today programme that the European Commission s plan to take control of the bloc s vaccine rollout has backfired. Officials in Brussels had hoped that its mass vaccination purchasing scheme would be a symbol of European solidarity and strength. However, amid the ongoing row with AstraZeneca and last night s threat to suspend parts of the Brexit deal, the BBC correspondent said that Brussels was facing a furious backlash.

Several European leaders and diplomats have heavily criticised the EU s decision to temporarily suspend Article 16 of the Brexit deal, which deals with the Northern Ireland protocol. The EU did end up reversing the decision, but not before political damage was made. As a result, EU diplomats have criticised Brussels for shutting them out of any discussions on the matter, with many stating they were completely blindsided by the move.
EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides called on the EU to be prioritised in the future.
Meanwhile, a leading MEP warned an export ban could be imposed on the UK to halt distribution.
In a post on Twitter, BBC Europe Editor Katya Adler condemned the behaviour of officials and highlighted previous promises.

She wrote: “While people everywhere suffer +die from Covid – the vaccine dispute between governments and with pharmaceutical companies is getting uglier and exposing hypocrisy.
“The EU lectured the world about ‘vaccines for all’ and now is considering an export ban.”
