Maywood, Ill. - May 19, 2021 - A team of scientists from Loyola University Chicago s Stritch School of Medicine have discovered a critical component for renewing the heart s molecular motor, which breaks down in heart failure.
Approximately 6.2 million Americans have heart failure, an often fatal condition characterized by the heart s inability to pump enough blood and oxygen throughout the body. This discovery could represent a novel approach to repair the heart.
Their findings, published in the May 19 issue of
Nature Communications, show how a protein called BAG3 helps replace worn-out components of the cardiac sarcomere. The sarcomere is a microscopic structure inside every heart muscle cell that causes it to contract. All the cells then work together to make the heart pump blood around the body.

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – What was supposed to be a happy family outing ended in tragedy after the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) they were riding in fell into an irrigation canal, killing 13 people, most of them children, in Barangay Bulo here Sunday.
Tabuk police chief Police Col. Radino Belly said a black Ford Everest with license plates AAK 9184 driven by Jail Officer 1 Soy Lope Agtulao, 36, plunged into the irrigation canal and submerged in the water at about 6 p.m.
Authorities said Soy died along with her children Cydwin Lope, 6, and Cyan Lope, 4; her sister Sony Puking Lope, 22; her father Alfredo Cutit Lope, 59; relatives Judilyn Talawec Dumayom, 31; Seadarn Dumayom, 5; Jeslyn Dumayom,4; Remedios Longey Basilio, 56; Jessibel Basilio Paycao, 27; Cedric Basilio Paycao, 4; Scarlet Paycao, 3; and Marlo Gel Perena, 6.

Mayo medical professionals say the health care workforce has seen issues of systemic social injustice and racism across many generations.
