Monrovia – One of Liberia’s top female politicians, Edith Gongloe-Weh says unfavorable events against women candidates in Gbarpolu and Nimba Counties in the just ended special senatorial elections are calculated attempts to silence women in Liberian politics.
Madam Gongloe-Weh, similar to Madam Botoe Kanneh of Gbarpolu who was attacked by the Country Devil and later rescued by a group of women, was the lone female candidate among seven contestants vying for one of Nimba County’s senatorial seats on the ticket of the opposition Collaborating Political Parties (CPP).

MONROVIA – The second and third witnesses that testified on behalf of the National Elections Commission (NEC) last Friday provided a corroborating testimony in line with NEC first witness.
NEC hearing is presided over by Cllr. Bokai Harris.
Taking the witness stand on Friday, January 15, 2021, the second witness who also represented senator-elect, Jeremiah Koung as Chief supervisor in Ganta, testified to the satisfaction of the voting process during tallying and the signing of the tally sheets by various representatives.

NEC reported that Rep. Koung (right) won Nimba County senate race with 37,899, which represents 36.12 percent of the votes, while his closest rival, Edith Gongloe-Weh (left), candidate of the ticket CPP obtained 34,153, which amounts to 32.55 percent of all valid votes counted. However, Gongloe-Weh has challenged the results and is demanding a re-run.
The possibility of the Supreme Court to hear and determine the merit of the elections dispute between Nimba senatorial candidates Edith Gongloe Weh and Jeremiah Kpan Koung, from the just-ended December 8 Special Senatorial election is now becoming a reality.
This stems from a Bill of Information filed on Monday December 28 before the Hearing officer of the National Election Commission (NEC), Cllr, Boakai P. Harris, by lawyers representing Senatorial candidate Edith Gongloe Weh of the opposition Collaborating Political Parties (CPP).
Gongloe-Weh appeals to Nimbaians
The Special Senatorial election is over, but there seems to be bad blood among Nimbains on tribal lines so much that senatorial candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh has seen the need to speak out against such tribal division, which she considers bad for the county and its development.
According to Madam Weh, her people need to grow up and do away with tribal conflict, even though there are still mixed feelings from the just-ended election. However, such mixed feelings do not warrant the steps they are taking now; rather, it is time for them to unite and behave as members of the same happy home.
