Lake County detectives say the desecration occurred at the Edgewood Cemetery, a historically African-American cemetery, December 6th. Crime scene investigators collected various items left at the gravesites, including cigars, and collected DNA. This led them to Brian Tolentino, 43, of Davenport. He pointed them to Juan Lopez of Lake Wales. They say Lopez told them the men opened the graves and removed the skulls of five people in a religious ritual.

Investigators used DNA from discarded cigars to arrest two suspects who allegedly stole human skulls from a Florida cemetery for use in “religious practices,” the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. When investigators initially processed the crime scene, they collected items including multiple cigars and sent them to a lab for DNA testing, the sheriff’s office said. DNA samples from the cigars were submitted to a database for comparison, and one matched 43-year-old Brian Montalvo Tolentino, a resident of Davenport, the department said.
