Any accounting of this year s restaurant closures must begin and end with the coronavirus pandemic. Since March, the pandemic has forced restaurants to close their dining rooms entirely or operate at reduced capacity, to shift to unfamiliar takeout, curbside pickup and delivery models, to let valued employees go, to find some way to stay afloat in an industry with tight margins in the best of times.
Not every restaurant on this list cited the pandemic as a reason for closing â and the year s closures began before the pandemic arrived, of course. But for restaurants, as for so many other facets of our society, the pandemic was the story of 2020, and its consequences will reverberate well into 2021 and the list of restaurants that close then.
