From 1981 to 1989 Edelbert Richter was involved in groups critical of the GDR regime and in the peace and ecological movements . He developed political models for the reunification of Germany. Richter was a founding member of DA - Der Demokratische Aufbruch (Democratic Awakening party) in 1989 , which was an oppositional political group in East Germany.
