Ex-Tyrers ground floor Formal plans for a community hub at the ground floor of the former Tyrers building – including for the recreation of the venue s famous tea room in a 1920s style - have been drawn up. Tyrers was a St Helens institution and its department store and top floor cafe were a key part of the town centre for decades. The landmark building was left empty for several years before being purchased by developer the Luxor Group, which created 15 one and two-bedroom apartments upstairs and commercial units below. A budget shop, named Tyrer s Express (which had no link to the former business) occupied the ground floor and and basement before closing.

The Smokehouse by The Dean, a Texan barbecue-style restaurant, unveiled its outdoor eating space on Barrow Street, St Helens last week. With the venue s sister restaurant, The Dean, also hosting outside hospitality at weekend, the street was buzzing wirh life in the Saturday sunshine as customers sampled the alfresco experience. The owners have unveiled plans to develop the Smokehouse further by expanding into a neighbouring unit, which is occupied by salon Classy Cuts. The salon is set to relocate over the road to its other premises, Forever Tanning and Beauty.
THE long wait will soon be over. shops, hairdressers and pub beer gardens are among the places that can begin to reopen from Monday (April 12) as easing of the third national lockdown continues. And for one of St Helens town centre s streets, this week will herald the arrival of a new venue, some new flavours and a new vibe. Smokehouse by The Dean – a Texas barbecue-style restaurant – will open as the sister restaurant to fine-dining restaurant The Dean, on Barrow Street following the transformation of a unit during lockdown. The relaxed Covid-19 rules mean limited groups of people can dine and drink outside and so the venue s bosses are bringing in parasols, patio heaters and blankets to the pedestrianised street as they aim to safely entertain customers outdoors.
