Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series

Wild conditions on the River Derwent in Hobart - Combined Clubs Summer Pennant 2020-21 © Jane Austin Sailing was not for the faint-hearted in Race Nine of the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series sailed on the River Derwent on Saturday. The fleet was forewarned about the wild and windy weather but didn t expect to beat off the start line to the windward mark in 30+ knots and to fly down the River at breakneck speed. In the almost five-hour race, there was less than 30 seconds between first and second in divisions 1, 3 and 4, testament to the intense competition across the fleet. The Melges 32, Assagai (Chris Sheehan) flew out of the blocks in Division 1, had a wipe-out just off Sandy Bay Beach, but still got to the bottom mark in Variety Bay, well in front. The fleet struggled to set kites in the heavy winds, but conditions eventually settled to a consistent 20 knots. A stand out in Division 1 was the tacking duel between Advantedge (Andrew Jones) and Fork in the R

Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series - Race 8 by Jane Austin 28 Feb 05:07 UTC 27 February 2021 The Division One fleet hits the start line in Race 8 of the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series © Colleen Darcey There s not much that Tasmanian sailing legend Don Calvert doesn t know about sailing on the River Derwent in Hobart, and the proof was in the pudding yesterday with the skipper sailing his Castro 40, Intrigue, to victory on IRC and AMS handicaps, and taking out third place on performance in Division One of the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series. Ross Mannering, bowman on Intrigue and Vice Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, said that the breeze was a bit up and down, but they had a great day on the water. After a general recall, Intrigue headed east off the start line which paid off for the team. Despite a wineglass at the start of the second downwind leg, we managed to just get enough time on our rivals and, once again this s

Combined Clubs Two Handed Long Race Series - Race Two Preview by Jane Austin 27 Feb 00:28 UTC Alice Grubb and Tom Stearnes will sail Sundowner two-handed in the Combined Clubs Two Handed Long Race Series in Hobart © Jane Austin Short-handed racing is increasing in popularity worldwide and this is certainly the case in Hobart with 21 boats competing in the second race of the Combined Clubs Two Handed Long Race Series. Alice Grubb and Tom Stearnes sailing their Adams 12 Sundowner, will be hoping for another good race after winning the first race on performance handicap in Division One. Our old girl loves a good upwind beat and hard reach. Tom and I are getting used to sailing two-up - we are pretty good at swapping roles to preserve stamina. I think that having old sails with hanks and lazy jacks makes life a fair bit easier on this boat, said Grubb.

Banjo s Shoreline Crown Series Bellerive Regatta 2021

Banjo s Shoreline Crown Series Bellerive Regatta 2021 - Overall by Jane Austin 14 Feb 11:20 UTC 12-14 February 2021 Summer sailing was at its glorious best in Hobart for the final day of sailing in the Banjos Shoreline Crown Series Bellerive Regatta. Midnight Rambler (Ed Psaltis) sailed an exceptional regatta winning the Racing Keelboat Division on IRC and defending its Tasmanian AMS Rating Championship from Fish Frenzy Whistler (Drew Latham) with five wins from seven races (nine points). Race Officer, Steve Shield, had Race Six of the Racing Keelboat Group under way but pulled the pin on the race due to a changing breeze. Shield moved the race course up the river and set a new start line off the Casino. This proved an excellent move allowing the fleet two get two quick races in as a consistent sea-breeze filled in.
