On the evening of Monday, December 21, the two gas giants came closer than at any time in the last 400 years - about 0.1 degrees apart - and marked the closest Great Conjunction seen in nearly 800 years. And although from our point of view the planets lengthy orbits bring them together once every 20 years, Great Conjunctions are not guaranteed to happen in the evening or the nighttime.
