Space tourism is a thing that can be done, but only if you’re moderately rich, in excellent health, and willing to undergo training and testing to qualify for it. If you only check the first of these boxes, the closest thing to living on the International Space Station is a glass house in Malibu, California.

“master of glass.”
They say living in a glass house, both literal and metaphorical, is cool only at first, before it becomes a nightmare. For those who choose to make their own mind about stuff like that, one of Niles’ most iconic mansions has been listed for sale this month. Welcome to the Real Estate newsletter, which marks an exciting new period for The Times’ coverage of Southern California’s larger-than-life real estate market.
The newsroom is beefing up its commitment to all things real estate by bringing the work of housing market reporter Andrew Khouri, commercial real estate reporter Roger Vincent and luxury real estate reporter Jack Flemming under one umbrella.
Their work will live on the brand-new Real Estate page and be condensed into this weekly newsletter. While we bid a fond farewell to Hot Property legend Lauren Beale, you, dear reader, are still in good hands. The Hot Property section and name, meanwhile, are moving to a sponsored content format separate from this newsletter and from our real estate coverage. (See the editor’s note below for a recap.)
Variety recently discovered the identity of the person who paid exactly $40 million in cash last summer for the former compound of âThe Tonight Showâ host Johnny Carson. The âsecretâ buyer was Silicon Valley investor Riaz Valani, who amassed his fortune as the very first investor in Juul, the original e-cigarette company that made vaping popular. Juul was bought out by Marlboro parent company Altria in 2018 for $12.8 billion.
The original asking price for the bluff-top Point Dume property had been $81.5 million. Its former owner, producer Sidney Kimmel, had purchased the 4.16-acre estate in 2007 from Carsonâs widow Alexis for $36.5 million.
The property is built on either side of a public street (Wildlife Road), with a guest house on one side and a 7,000-square foot main house designed by architect Ed Niles on the other. It features âjungle-like landscaping,â a koi pond with its own waterfall and a second waterfall cascading over a rock sculpture
