witnesses who described a long series of automatic gunfire before hearing two pop pop, and then the entire shooting scenario was over just outside of the building. they were on lockdown for some time. but there was a great deal of security here last night, carol. in fact we were told there was layers of security to get inside into the event. and then we were told by law enforcement officials that there was also a s.w.a.t. team waiting in the back of the building for a scenario just like this. carol? all right. ed lavandera reporting live from garland, texas, this morning. i want to bring in rosa flores now. she s been digging into what we know about the suspects. tell us more. carol, i want to start off with just the fact that the fbi is saying that they knew about this guy. that they had been tracing him, and this is information that my colleague susan candiotti has been able to dig up for us this morning. but the fbi had been monitoring this guy. they had been following him. and
make any comments. his attorneys asked us to wait a little bit. they said they wanted to go inside and take care of what they needed to take care of. so it remains to be seen whether or not mr. bates will make any sort of public comment after he has been booked into the sheriff s department. the very department where he spent the last seven years volunteering as a reserve deputy and volunteering more than 1,000 hours. as he walked in first time i ever had seen him face to face he appeared rather subdued as he walked in quietly inside the sheriff s department here. we anticipate not exactly sure how long this proscess will take for him getting booked in on charges of second-degree manslaughter carol. it appears there may be some sort of statement either his attorneys or mr. bates himself might make after they wrap up their business inside the sheriff s department here carol. ed lavandera reporting live from tulsa oklahoma, this morning. i ll be right back.

30 minutes worth of warning ahead of the storms even though there weren t tornado sirens in the town of fairdale. emergency officials say that those people, many of the people here, did get the warnings ahead of time. and in the cases of the two elderly women who died, it would not have made a difference. they were in the two hardest hit areas in this town of fairdale. ed lavandera reporting for us. the national weather service has surveyed the damage from fairdale, illinois. and there s some important findings. derek van dam is at the world weather center with more that. reporter: you know, tornadoes of this severity have been known to pick up full vehicles and actually place them in trees. it takes broken glass and any kind of debris or shrapnel that it can find and makes it literal projectiles that become very dangerous. now the national weather service, after the significant fact and tornadoes take place, they have to go and assess the damage to attach some sort of, well, scale
