West Norfolk farmers threaten to stop growing sugar beet

The double whammy of a devastating aphid-transmitted disease taking hold and winter weather that turned fields into a mudbath is making some West Norfolk growers consider whether to step back from growing sugar beet.
Many have lost large amounts of money with yields down as much as 80 per cent this season after crops were hit by virus yellows.
British Sugar has recognised that it has been a challenging year and has put together a package of measures to help the industry but a number of farmers are saying it may not be good enough to persuade them to keep growing beet..
