Six die in northern Sudan floods, more than 2,000 homes damaged

Six people died following heavy rainfall in northern Sudan’s River Nile state in the past few days. More than 55,000 people across the country were affected by heavy rains and flooding as of 17 August. The Emergency Chamber of Ed Damer locality in River Nile state reported yesterday that six people died in the floods, as well as a large number of livestock. At least 274 houses collapsed and 2,058 houses and a number of farms were damaged.

COVID-19 in Sudan: State of Emergency as cases rise in North Kordofan

Northern State has also reported dozens of new cases. In Sennar, medics cancelled their strike after the authorities agreed to offer them more protection on the work floor. At a meeting on Saturday, the decision regarding North Kordofan by the Health Emergency Committee includes banning of all social, political, and tribal gatherings in governmental and private institutions, in addition to banning collective breaking of the fast of Ramadan. Prayers in mosques are to be reduced to a maximum of 15 minutes, with the obligation to wear face masks and use hand sanitisers.

Mukhtar Abdallah, a member of the Shendi Resistance Committees, told Radio Dabanga that the Shendi Resistance Committees had organized an event for peaceful coexistence and that they were attacked by a group supporting the former regime. He said that the police intervened using stun grenades to disperse the clashes. Khader El Mamoun was wounded during the clashes. No further information about his welfare was reported.
