little breathing room and treasury secretary janet yellen pushes back the default deadline by just a few days. alexandria hoff is live in dc with more on that. good morning. according to the president, a deal is close and things are looking good. that was said departing for camp david yesterday. republicans and democrats did seem close to a final pact last night. that s the update we have. there are still major sticking points and fox news was told that permitting reform for emergency programs is now out as for strengthening work requirements for government aid, republicans say the debt ceiling will not be raised without it but democrats appear unwilling to budge on that lending strong words. to me at this point, if they want to continue to be economic terrorists, that s invoking the 14th amendment and minting a coin. and keeping the economy moving. strong words indeed, the department has reassessed the
days. joe: alexandria hoff is live in washington dc. reporter: a major fiction point for stronger work requirements in certain kinds of federal-aid but the president said he s feeling optimistic. president biden: with the debt limit, things are looking good, very optimistic. what do you tell democrats who say they don t want you to bow on work requirements? president biden: i don t bow to anybody. rachel: less optimistic statement call the work requirement cruel and senseless. to me at this point if they want to continue to be economic terrorists, that is invoking the 14th amendment, keeping the economy moving. reporter: republicans feel their sticking point to raise the debt ceiling is your common sense. think about this for a minute. democrats are willing to
point two, joe, you have to consider that erdogan, if he wins this election, will have completely consolidated power in turkey. he s edged up to it. i think the odds, unfortunately, are 75% to 80% he ll probably achieve that in the coming runoff in two weeks. let s wait and see. it means you ll see complete erdogan. he ll have complete control of the country. he s imprisoned journalists, pursued conspiracy theories, has been someone who has been difficult for the alliance. third and final point, what s he going to do? will he continue the behavior like buying russian weapons, getting close to putin, objecting, preposterously, to the inclusion of sweden to nato? he needs to get the economy
laid this out this morning. some kind of debt limit deal would be good for biden. i mean, especially if it cuts spending or it freezes spending or limits spending, you know, he s tacking toward the center as he gears up for reelection. you look at it on immigration, for instance. doing something on spending, reigning in government spending that s never going to be bad for a president in an election year ago, i think something to keep the economy moving, you know, doesn t alienate progressives too much, and you know, limits or reduces spending. there s a deal to be had there. democrats would argue that this is not fair for him to be making any sort of deal here, that republicans have raised the debt limit without any questions a number of times in the past, and republicans have been president. it s only an issue when democrats are in power, so why should the democrats fold suddenly when the republicans decide to make an issue of it. yeah, well, sorry, it s not fair. it isn t fair.
don t apply? and i guess a key question is are there proactive conversations ongoing, senator well, let me just say it s important to understand what is at stake right now our country will default on its debt if republicans don t work to raise the debt ceiling, which simply means that we re going to pay our bills. every family pays their bills, every business pays their bills. republicans are saying we re not going to pay our bills we re going to let our country default and bring dachaos to th country if you do not cut and undermine our ability to make the investments that we need to in our economy, in jobs, in veterans housing, in school lunches for kids, in so many things that our country relies on to keep our economy moving. that is crazy. this is asking us do you want chaos or do you want chaos and the answer is no and it doesn t have to be this way. simply pay our bills
