People taken into custody for economic offences should not be handcuffed and clubbed with those arrested for heinous crimes such as rape and murder, a parliamentary committee has recommended.
The parliamentary committee suggested changes to the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), stating that economic offenders should not be included in the category of individuals who can be handcuffed.
Addressing an event at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters here, he said there has been a quantum jump in extradition of criminals and fugitives in recent years, especially after India hosted the 90th Interpol General Assembly in October 2022. Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel, said 19 criminals/fugitives have returned to India this year so far, whereas previously, on an average around 10 of them have returned to India every year
It will be followed by the G20 anti-corruption ministerial meeting on August 12, which will be chaired by Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh, it said. This second ministerial meeting of the Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) will be the first to be held in-person.
