[applause] thank you. I i am grateful to be inspired and mentored by many great civil rights leaders and my educational leaders which includes usf law school. [applause] and my family members who have mentored me and have paved the way for me along my career path. I could not have gotten there without them. My greatest inspirations are my parents William Little and maria little, and i my greatest inspirations are my parents William Little and maria little, and i want to talk about howthey were inspired by the march on washington and dr. Kings speech which subsequently has passed on to me. My mother was among the 200,000 people who joined dr. Martin they were inspired by the march on washington and dr. Martin luther king on the march on washington 50 years ago and stood up for the rights for freedom. As a teenager growing up in washington as a teenager growing up in washington dc,
Officer. When we hire on a Police Officer we look for 3 things besides integrity, we look for the ability to do the job, the desire to do the job and the interest. If you are missing any of those 3 things eventually the officer will not be successful. When i was in personnel we were only hiring about 1 out of every 100 people who applied to the city. So you can see its a very stringent requirement when you are looking for people to do what you want to have done. This is particularly important when you are initially deciding who wants to be a Police Officer, we want to get them through the academy, get them through probation and make them successful officers. But its just as important when becoming a member of a specialty unit. The iplt is really big. There are probably people in this room saying i got graffiti when somebody else wanted it, and thats hard. And theres people like me and the officers i have hired into my units that just love the job and see the value in it, see the value
Thats what exactly what we need. Many of us want to live in the city and provide our services to the city, but [background noise] we have been forced to live somewhere else. I feel like i take the paycheck from San Francisco and spend somewhere else. And, again, i want this program. I want to take advantage of this program. And i want to live in San Francisco. Again, i want to thank mayor lee, supervisor mark farrell, sheriffs department, our sheriff ross mirkarimi, the union, the [speaker not understood] association, Managers Association msa, for everything, they come up with a plan to help first responders. And i believe that its a god send gift program for us because we want to live in the city because we want to serve the city. This is where we belong. And again, as i said, i made my decision when former sheriff Mike Hennessy swore me as a peace officer. I decided this is where i belong. What kinds of things might you encourage tenants to do besides simply get tenants renters insurance and earthquake insurance, what else do you think tenants should do . I think its really important to know if they happen to be in the building where is the safest place for them to go when the shaking starts. If theyre out of the building, whats their continuity plan for connecting with family . They should give their Emergency Contact information to their resident manager so that the resident manager knows how to get in touch. And have emergency supplies on hand. The tenants should be responsible to have their extra water and flashlights and bandages and know how to use a toilet when theres no sewage and water flows down. And the owners of the building should be proactive in that regard as well. So, george, thank you so much for joining us. That was really great.
