WORTHINGTON The city will not solicit payment of registration fees by owners of rental properties for 2021, members of the Worthington City Council agreed Monday night, though it will continue to ask that such owners still register their properties.
Council members voted during a February meeting to rescind the city’s Rental Housing Registration and Inspection Plan, a decision prompted by both an inability to do rental property inspections due to COVID-19 and a need to develop a potentially stricter and more enforceable policy. The council debated the merits of keeping the fee in place for 2021 despite rescinding the program, as well as options that include making the fees optional or waiving them entirely.

WORTHINGTON In a Tuesday evening meeting that lasted a little less than 15 minutes, the Worthington Planning Commission agreed to forward a written opinion to the Worthington City Council regarding Redevelopment Projects 6 and 7.
The commission’s unanimous vote followed a recommendation from city staff and confirms the projects “conform to a general plan for the development of the locality as a whole,” Worthington Assistant City Administrator/Director of Economic Development Jason Brisson said.
“We want to fit these into the comprehensive plan, and this says that we’re not putting residential where it shouldn’t be,” Brisson explained Tuesday to Planning Commission members.

Worthington Economic Development Authority staff was contacted by Clark-Vinroot Properties with a request for $200,000 in revolving loan funds for its redevelopment work, Assistant City Administrator/Director of Economic Development Jason Brisson reported during a brief EDA meeting Tuesday. Brisson explained that the developer found between $50,000 and $75,000 in unforeseen fire safety requirements, and hopes to use the remaining $125,000 of the loan request for storefront improvements on the building’s exterior.

WORTHINGTON The city of Worthington will head back to the drawing board on its rental housing inspection, city council members decided Monday night.
Following staff recommendation, the council voted unanimously to suspend enforcement of the city’s current rental housing registration and inspection program due to, as Worthington City Administrator Steve Robinson explained Monday, “its ineffectiveness and the current public health crisis.” The action called on city staff to begin work on a new rental housing program that would “protect the health, safety and welfare of the city’s residents.”
