Kārearea are New Zealand’s only native falcon, and the most threatened bird of prey with fewer than 8000 birds remaining. Up to three quarters die in their first year due to human activities. The trust worked to increase the Marlborough population with breeding and rehabilitation work at the Brancott Vineyard aviary, and advocacy work through education and research programmes. Having just finished two other falcon murals in Palmerston North, SwiftMantis said he was really moved by his visit to the aviary, and surprised such important work was done by a charity. “It’s pretty important work.”

Destination Marlborough General Manager Jacqui Lloyd said Marlborough is really lucky as a region with a nice mix of international (40 per cent) and domestic (60 per cent) tourism. Once five squares in a row are completed, a reward is released such as an electronic voucher. “Each options of getting your square is different, it can be by posting a photo, showing a receipt or doing a location pin. It is a great opportunity for getting people out and about amongst the region,” Lloyd said. The Council and TEAM (The Economic Action Marlborough) Group are underway with a survey of local businesses across all sectors to investigate the longer term impact of COVID-19.
“We would like to better understand the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on the Marlborough business community, to carry out necessary and appropriate actions as part of ongoing economic recovery,” said Neil Henry, Manager Strategic Planning and Economic Development. “We are seeking the input of as many businesses as possible, large and small within all business sectors from across the Marlborough region.”

A busy year looms for Marlborough’s TEAM (The Economic
Action Marlborough) Group which will reconvene at the
beginning of February to consider its key focus areas for
2021.
Established by the Council in April 2020, TEAM
is part of the Marlborough COVID-19 Recovery Plan. The
group’s activities have been informed by an Expert
Advisory Panel and working groups in the labour and
business, and tourism, retail and hospitality
sector.

as needing to provide support, leadership, promotion of

TEAM (The Economic Action Marlborough) Group delivered
its latest Marlborough Economic Update to individuals,
businesses, agencies and sector representatives at the
Marlborough Convention Centre this week.
The
presentation included a detailed report from economists
Infometrics, delivered by Brad Olsen and Alistair Schorn, on
revised estimates of the economic impacts of COVID-19 on
Marlborough.
Councillor and TEAM Group Chair Mark
Peters spoke about the group’s activities so far with a
number of Council-funded projects either completed or in
progress.
