Award-winning marine ecologist killed in Tel Aviv traffic accident

Screen capture from video of marine biologist Shimrit Perkol-Finkel. (YouTube) An esteemed marine biologist who pioneered an innovative solution for eco-friendly seawalls was killed in Tel Aviv on Sunday while riding an electric scooter. Dr. Shimrit Perkol-Finkel, 45, was riding down Hamasger Street when she was struck by a passing truck. The driver, a 30-year-old resident of Tira, was called in for questioning by the police. She is survived by her husband and three children. Her husband, Kobi Perkol-Finkel, speaking Monday, said that “Shimrit pushed for a change in worldview.” “Israel was too small for her, most of the business she did was abroad,” he told the Ynet news site. “Her concept was that what went into the water should be green and help the sea. Shimrit wanted to contribute, help and change.”

Coastalock on display in San Diego - Dredging Today

Coastalock on display in San Diego February 4, 2021, by Eldin Ganic ECOncrete Tech LTD and the Port of San Diego are teaming up to debut one of the most sustainable coastal armoring on the market – Coastalock. The Coastalock system, developed by Israel-based company ECOncrete, comprises interlocking hollow units made of proprietary bio-enhancing concrete that provide habitats for oysters, starfish, algae, grasses, echinoderms and other marine wildlife – which can fail to thrive in the barren environments created by rubble or concrete modules, known as riprap. In a three-year pilot, the port will replace riprap with 72 of the 3.5-tonne modules in two locations to see if it regenerates the local ecosystem by creating a series of rich, interlocking tidal pools.

Seattle DJC com local business news and data - Construction - Huge girder installed at I-5 project in Tacoma

The 223-foot-long girder was set at night using two cranes. Concrete Technology Corp. has one-upped itself. Last summer, crews from Atkinson Construction placed 10 girders made by the Tacoma company that are 220 feet long and 115.5 tons among the longest in the country. That mark was eclipsed earlier this month, when Atkinson installed a Concrete Tech girder that is 223 feet, 4.5 inches long and weighs over 123 tons. A Concrete Tech spokesman told the DJC last summer that the 223-foot girder is the longest in North America. For comparison, the massive concrete I-beam is about the same length as the wingspan of a Boeing 747-8 jet.
